Sailing Opportunities

We sail from two centres Alton Water and Woolverstone.

Alton Water

Is a still water reservoir where we organise morning sailing sessions for adults every Monday of the year, from March until early December, excluding Bank Holidays.

From May until mid September, there is an open youth sailing session (aged 8 to 18 years) every Thursday evening after school.

Although these session are intended for individual sailors, we can accept groups of up to four sailors. For larger groups please contact us first.

Personal assistants do not usually go on board with the sailor. However, if there is a need then please contact us so we can ensure we have the right boat available.

We have 18 Hansa 2.3 and 3.03 Dinghies, 3 Challenger trimarans and 2 RS Ventures in which instructors can teach people to sail, with the potential to progress to single handed sailing.

For many, this is the ultimate liberation, plenty of our members go on to become confident sailors and to race on a regular basis. There are open meetings all around the country to which sailors can go.

Woolverstone

Located on the River Orwell, we operate river trips from the 1st of May until the end of September every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Using a Sonar class sailing boat and a Coulam Wheelyboat V20 powered craft we take passengers out on the water, either up the river towards Ipswich or down river towards Felixstowe depending upon the prevailing wind and tides.

Our sailors usually come in groups and are generally those who will not learn to sail solo but benefit from simply being on the water. Carers come sailing with the group.

Due to high demand (in particular, the Wheelyboat) these sessions are often booked several months before the season start.

The river trips typically can last up to 2 hours. The direction and duration (including who goes in which boat) is dependant on many factors such as tides, prevailing weather condition and is at the discretion of the Duty Session Leader.

Other Events

We on occasions organise additional events from other locations such as Seal watching trips from Walton on the Naze. As they become available they will be published in our newsletter or website.
