Disability Awareness Course
We would encourage all project volunteers to take part in this course every so often - particularly new volunteers. The course looks at the social model of disability to help identify possible barriers and how they can be overcome. Scenarios are used to help understand the needs of individuals with physical disabilities, visual impairment, hearing loss, learning disabilities and mental health. It considers appropriate strategies on working with these groups.
The course will teach you to be aware of the needs of disabled children and adults and help improve essential communication skills. The use of current terminology used to explain disability will be considered which will help to give an understanding of disability and its challenges in the sporting environment. Different types of disability will be considered: physical impairments, visual impairments, deafblindness, deafness and intellectual disabilities.
