Compounding our compound

We always start sailing quite early in the year - usually in March. With an early start like that comes, not surprisingly, weather risks. Usually these are strong winds, but this year it was just relentlessly wet. This caused us some problems with moving boats in and out of the compound, so we decided to try and improve the access. One of our volunteers did a detailed survey of the site and researched a range of possible solutions. We settled on a grass matting solution. So, we levelled the area (with around 15 tons of soil), turfed it and then putting down grass protection matting. The grass will quickly (we hope!) grow through this and bind it all together, creating a much more resilient surface.

Many thanks to all the volunteers who helped plan this and carry it out over three days. Thanks also to the team from Rotary Club of Ipswich who came down and helped. Fuelled by cake and biscuits, they did a great job ....
